Sailor 50 States Part 2

Today let’s take a look at five new inks in the Sailor 50 States collection: Delaware, Maryland, Georgia, Washington and Alaska. Thanks to Pen Chalet for sending these inks over for review!

Swabs:

Left to right: Delaware, Maryland, Georgia, Washington and Alaska. These inks come in square 20ml bottles.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 15-30 seconds

Water Resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, low sheen (Delaware) and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was lots of feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Maryland is closest to Diamine Sepia.

Delaware is closest in color to Sailor Ink Studio 931.

Washington is similar to Lennon Tool Bar Wenshan Pouchong Tea. Georgia is browner than Robert Oster Astorquiza Olive.

Alaska is close to Pilot Iroshizuku Shimbashi-iro.

Longer Writing:

I used an Odyssey notebook. All of the inks had an average flow.

Overall, out of the five inks Maryland is my favorite but I enjoyed all five of them.

Ink Review #1802: KWZ IG Red 3

KWZ IG Red #3 is from KWZ’s Iron Gall collection. You can find this ink for sale at Appelboom.

The color:

IG Red starts out a deep red but dries to a red violet.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is darker with black sheen.

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 80 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, medium black sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper there is some feathering in all nib sizes as well as a bit of bleeding.

Longer writing:

I used a Pilot Custom 74 Merlot with a medium nib on a Taroko Breeze notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, this is a nice ink-interesting and well-behaved.

Ink Review #1801: KWZ IG Red 1

KWZ IG Red #1 is from KWZ’s Iron Gall collection. You can find this ink for sale at Appelboom.

The color:

IG Red starts out a deep red but dries to a muted purple.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is darker and turns black in places.

I used a Pelikan M205 Star Ruby with a fine nib on a Taroko Breeze notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, this ink ink dries to a nice purple. It’s well behaved with medium water resistance.

Ink Review #1800: Private Reserve Violet-Silver

Private Reserve Violet-Silver is from Private Reserve’s Pearlescent collection. You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens.

The color:

Violet is a medium purple ink with lots of shimmer.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has so much shimmer that you can only see the base color where it feathers.

Writing samples:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: Low

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: High

Other properties: no shading, no sheen, and silver shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper there is some feathering in all nib sizes as well as a bit of bleeding.

Longer writing:

I used a Franklin-Christoph 45 Purpurarium with a medium nib on a Taroko Breeze notebook. The ink had a wet flow.

Overall, this ink bleeds way too much for me. It even bleeds through Tomoe River 68 in a fine nib.

Delicious Sleep is a medium violet ink.

Overall, this ink is pretty and well behaved.

Ink Review #1798: Private Reserve Infinity Violet

Private Reserve Infinity Violet is from Private Reserve’s Infinity collection. These inks are designed to perform well even if you leave the cap off your pen for a while. You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens.

The color:

Violet is a medium purple ink.

Overall, this ink does what it’s supposed to do-it flows well even when you leave your pen cap off for a while.

Platinum 3776

I’ve had a lot of requests for pen reviews lately so I decided to finally try one. Thanks to Luxury Brands for sending two Platinum 3776’s in Bourgogne/Gold with Coarse and Music nibs to try. Let’s take a look at both pens. You can find both the Coarse and Music nibs for sale at Anderson Pens.

Size Stats:

Length closed: 5.5 inches

Length of body: 4.7 inches

Cap: screw-on

Trim: gold

Size Comparison:

Left to right: Pilot Custom 823, Pilot Custom 74, Lamy 2000, Platinum 3776, Pilot Vanishing Point, Pelikan 205, Pelikan 605, TWSBI Eco, Lamy Safari, Esterbrook Estie and Sailor Pro Gear.

When compared to other pens the 3776 is the same size as a Lamy 2000.

The pen unposted is a little shorter than the Lamy 2000.

Writing Samples:

The Coarse nib is essentially a double broad nib. The nib is nice and juicy, with an average flow for a double broad nib.

The Music nib is a little bit smoother than an italic nib. It flows well without being too wet.

I have a Platinum 3776 Nice Lavande with a broad nib so I decided to compare the 3 nibs. The broad is a bit drier than the other two, the Coarse is the juciest and the Music is a little less.

Matching Inks:

Out of the inks I have Diamine Cult Pens Deep Dark Red probably matches the best.

Overall, I really like the Platinum 3776 but I like the Coarse nib the best. My perfect nib for everyday use would be in-between the broad and coarse. If you have any suggestions for how to make the next pen review better, please let me know in the comments below!

Tanzanite is a medium violet ink.

Overall, this is a nice ink but at 40 seconds dry time I wouldn’t call it a fast dry ink.

The color:

Arabian Rose is a dusky mauve purple.

I ran out of ink and didn’t have enough for the longer writing sample. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, I enjoyed this ink. It’s well behaved and a pretty color.
