Ink Review #865: PenBBS 177 Beaten Path

penbbs-beaten-path-2.jpg

PenBBS 177 Beaten Path is from PenBBS Season 13. I’ve also seen the name translated as Follow in Footsteps. This would be a great Christmas or Holiday ink between the green color, red sheen and gold shimmer. Thanks to Vanness Pens for sending this ink over for review.

The color:

Beaten Path is a medium green with plenty of gold shimmer.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink shows off some red sheen in addition to the gold shimmer.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 15 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: Low-there was just a little bit of feathering in the flex nib.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-there was just a little bit of bleeding in the flex nib.

Other properties: high shading, low sheen, and gold shimmer. I was surprised by how much shading this ink had. I would classify it as high shading because you can see shading in every nib size, including extra fine nibs, but it’s not a huge color shift between the lighter and darker shades.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper the ink feathered in most nib sizes and had some bleeding in the flex nib.

Comparison Swabs:

Beaten Path is a bit lighter than Robert Oster Peppermint, but a little bit darker than Krishna Elegant Teal and Diamine Magical Forest. It has a cooler tone than Diamine Golden Ivy (which also has red sheen and gold shimmer). Click here to see the PenBBS inks together, and click here to see the green inks.

Longer Writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Green with a medium nib on Tomoe River paper. The ink had a slightly dry flow.

Overall, this would be a great ink for Christmas Cards. The shimmer did make the flow a bit drier, but it didn’t actually clog any of my pens. The drier flow allowed for more shading, even in the extra fine nib.
