Ink Review #225: Robert Oster Aussie Liquid Gold

Today's ink is Aussie Liquid Gold, a new limited quantity Shake 'N' Shimmy ink from Robert Oster. Only 100 50ml bottles were made, and each comes with a letter of authenticity signed by Robert Oster. I purchased my bottle of ink from Pen Chalet, the only retailer in the US to carry it right now.

The color:

Aussie Liquid Gold is a bright yellow with lots of shimmer.

So far most of the yellow shimmer inks I have seen have had gold shimmer, such as Robert Oster Heart of Gold and Diamine Golden Sands, so it's interesting to see a yellow ink with silver shimmer.

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Low

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and tons of shimmer

On 20 pound copy paper the ink behaved really well.

Longer writing:

I used a Pelikan M400 White Tortoise with a vintage 400N on Tomoe River paper. The ink had an average flow. The shimmer did clog the feed three times, but I just primed the feed a bit and kept writing. I didn't have any problems cleaning out the pen.

Overall, it's an interesting ink. It feels more spring/summer to me than Robert Oster Heart of Gold, which feels more appropriate for the holidays. Of the two I think I prefer Heart of Gold, but this one is lovely as well. Give it a try, you might love it.
