Top 10 Shading Inks

Shading is my favorite ink property, and it’s one of the first things I look for when I test an ink. I’m trying to do more reader request posts lately, and “what’s your favorite shading ink?” is one of questions I get asked the most. My favorites change constantly, so these are my top 10 shading inks today (in no particular order). If you ask me next week the answer will probably be different.

This is the ink that I compare all other grey inks to. It has amazing purple and green shading, but because it’s so light it’s more of a play ink rather than an everyday ink for me. So much fun to play with though!
This ink is such a gorgeous color and it has some amazing shading.
I wish this ink was in the standard lineup, but it was exclusive to the St. Louis Pen Show last year. Someday it’ll become available again (I hope) and I’ll buy all the bottles.
I pull this ink out every year and use it through most of the spring and summer.
The color of this ink is so unusual and interesting, and has some really fun shading.
This is another limited edition ink unfortunately, from the 2017 Chicago Pen Show and while I’ve found a lot of similar inks, I keep coming back to this one.
I love this ink so much-the color and shading is amazing but it’s another one of those light inks that’s better for playing, not everyday use. It’s pale blue with green and purple shading.
This is one of my favorite Robert Oster inks. Great color, shading and sheen.
One last play ink, just because it’s so pretty. Pale purple with green and blue shading.
