Ink Review #2451: Pelikan 4001 Blue Black

Today let’s take a look at Pelikan 4001 Blue Black. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Atlas Stationers.

The color:

Blue Black is a medium blue black.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some shading.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Blue Black is a little lighter than Lamy Blue Black. Click here to see the blue black inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pelikan M205 Blue Marbled with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, I really like this ink. Yes, the flow is dry but it works really well in wet Pelikan nibs.

Today let’s take a look at Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Tanzanite is a medium blue black.

I used a Pelikan M805 Ocean Swirl with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, I really enjoyed this ink. Yes, the flow is dry but it works really well in wet Pelikan nibs. This ink is worth a try!

Overall, this is a good classic black ink with a little shading and sheen. It is very dry, but works really well in wet Pelikan nibs.

Diamine Inkvent 2023 Days 11-15

It’s that time of year! It’s time for the 2023 Diamine Inkvent Calendar. Let’s take a look at days 11-15. You can find the calendar for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

Left to right: Glacier, Bah Humbug, Weeping Willow, Rainbow’s End and Walnut.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 40 seconds

Water Resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: Glacier has low shading and silver shimmer. Bah Humbug has low shading, low green sheen and red shimmer. Weeping Willow has medium shading. Rainbow’s End has low shading and pink shimmer. Walnut has low shading and low black sheen.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Glacier is closest to Colorverse Mystic Mountain.

Bah Humbug is close to Diamine All the Best.

Weeping Willow has more shading than PenBBS POTUS.

Rainbow’s End is more saturated than J Herbin Violet Imperial.

Walnut is a little lighter than Kobe Kyu-kyoryuchi Sepia.

Longer Writing:

All of the inks had average flows. I used a Taroko Enigma notebook.

Overall, I think Walnut is my favorite out of the five, but all are nice colors and well behaved.

Overall, I really like the color of this ink. It has some nice shading but is a bit dry.

Today’s ink is Wearingeul Phantom of the Opera from the World Literature collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Phantom of the Opera is a deep blue with lots of pinkish-red sheen.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has plenty of sheen.

Water resistance: Medium

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, high pink sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and a few dots of bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Longer Writing:

I used a Montegrappa Elmo with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, this ink is way too dry for me. I enjoyed the color and the sheen didn’t smear.

I used a TWSBI Eco Yellow with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, this is a lovely yellow. It can be too light in the smaller nib sizes so I would stick to medium and broad nibs.

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 20-40 seconds

Water Resistance: Low

Feathering: None (Sweet Dreams had medium feathering on some papers)

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None (Sweet Dreams had some bleeding on some papers)

Other properties: Bucks Fizz has low shading and gold shimmer. Jacaranda has low shading. Moon Beam haas low shading and blue shimmer. Velvet Emerald has medium shading and low pink sheen.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Bucks Fizz is pretty close to Diamine Citrus Ice.

Sweet Dreams is close to Kyo-no-oto Imayou-iro.

Jacaranda is cooler toned than Pilot Iroshizuku Jurojin.

Moon Beam is similar to Vinta Nakar.

Velvet Emerald is closes to Van Dieman’s Duck Nape.

Longer Writing:

All of the inks had average flows. I used a Taroko Enigma notebook.

Overall, Velvet Emerald is my favorite out of the five. Sweet Dreams had too much bleeding and feathering for me, but the others are well behaved.
