This week I’m making my way through some J Herbin inks, and today’s ink is J Herbin Rouge Grenat. This ink is new this year, and is available in 10ml and 30ml bottles. Thanks to Pen Chalet for sending a bottle over for review.

The color:

Rouge Grenat is a dark red, almost a burgundy.

Swabs:

In large swabs the ink looks very dark.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low

Other properties: very low shadingno sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was just a little bit of feathering, and some bleeding in the flex nib.

Comparison Swabs:

Ink swabs for comparison, left to right (top to bottom for mobile RSS): Diamine Burgundy Royale, J Herbin Rouge Grenat, and Sailor Jentle Grenade. Click here to see the J Herbin inks together.

Robert Oster Burgundy, Kyo-no-oto 6 Adzukiiro, and Robert Oster Clay Red. Click here to see the red inks together. Burgundy is probably the closest match to Rouge Grenat.

Longer writing:

I used a medium Kaweco Al-sport Red (I love this pen) on an ivory Hippo Noto Notebook. The ink had an average flow, but felt slightly watery to me.

Overall, it’s well behaved. There are a lot of inks close in this color range, great for fall or winter.
