Each year Pelikan releases a new Edelstein Ink of the Year. 2019’s ink is Star Ruby. I received aa bottle when I attended the Seattle Pelikan Hub, but you can find this ink for sale at most pen retailers, including Pen Chalet.

The color:

Star Ruby is a vibrant medium pink, almost a bright vivid raspberry pink.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has a little bit of gold sheen.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 15 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: Low-there was some feathering in the flex nib.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-there was some bleeding in the flex nib.

Other properties: low shading, tiny sheen, and no shimmer. The only sheen I could see was on Tomoe River paper in large swabs.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper the ink feathered in all nib sizes and had a little bit of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Star Ruby is a little bit darker than Colorverse Lights in Ceres, and a little bit lighter than Kaweco Ruby Red. When compared to Edelstein Ruby it is pinker and more vibrant. Click here to see the Pelikan inks together, and click here to see the pink inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Sailor Pro Gear Slim Supernova with a broad nib on Tomoe River paper. The ink had a a slightly dry flow.

Overall, I really enjoy the color, but the ink is a bit drier than I prefer. I love that Pelikan releases a new ink each year, and it’s lovely of them to give the ink to everyone who attends the Pelikan Hub.
