Ink Review #2911: Pennonia Hajnal Dawn

Today’s ink is Pennonia Hajnal Dawn from the Standard collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Hajnal Dawn ranges from a medium blue, almost a royal blue, all the way to the more pale green you can see on the right edges. I have no idea why the brand name came out the more standard blue and the ink name came out the more green color. I actually cleaned the flex pen a second time and re-inked it and got the same result.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink shades between a medium blue and a lighter blue.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, and on cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Low

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had feathering in the larger nib sizes and a few dots of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Hajnal is lighter than KWZ Azure #1 but darker than Colorverse Hippocamp. Click here to see the blue inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Waldmann Xetra with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly dry flow. I did have a few issues with inconsistent flow.

Overall, I like the color. I have no idea why it shaded all the way to a light green on the Col-o-ring paper but not on any other paper. I don’t need a full bottle since I didn’t love the inconsistent flow in long writing sessions.
