Ink Review #2910: Ink Institute Cat at Midnight

Today’s ink is Ink Institute Cat at Midnight from the Cat Daily collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Yoseka Stationery.

The color:

Ink Institute describes this ink color as dark purple blue with red sheen. To me it just looks like a dark black, but I did compare it with black and blue black inks below.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks more like the purple blue that Ink Institute describes it as.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, and on cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: no shading, low red sheen-this is really only seen on TR paper, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had feathering and bleeding in the flex nib and some ghosting.

Comparison Swabs:

Cat at Midnight is closest to Monteverde Onyx in swabs. Click here to see the black inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Galaxy with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, I’m not sure how I feel about the color. In large swabs on TR it looks blueish purple, but everywhere else it just looks black. The 30ml bottle is $20, which I find to be a steep price for an ink that just looks basic black in writing.
