Ink Review #1931: Kakimori 10 Koton

Kakimori 10 Koton is from the Pigmented collection. You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens.

The color:

Koton is a deep black with a blue undertone.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the blue undertone travels a bit.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 90 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: no shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Koton has more of a blue tone than these other black inks. Click here to see the black inks together.

Longer writing:

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Crossed Lines with a medium nib on an Odyssey notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, this is an interesting ink. It has a deep blue undertone that travels a bit in large swabs. It has a high water resistance but takes a long time to dry. I could take or leave this one, I have no strong feelings either way.

I used a Franklin-Christop 46 Blue Diamondcast with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, I like that it’s water resistant, but I don’t like the long dry time. This ink falls into a “sometimes” category. I can’t see myself reaching for it often, but there’s nothing outright wrong with it.

Longer writing:

I used a Kaweco Sport Sage with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, I love the water resistance but it does take a wicked long time to fully dry. Due to the pigment you do need to make sure you clean your pens well after using this ink. I don’t love the flow of this ink, it just wasn’t as smooth as most inks are. I’m just not in love with it.
