Ink Review #994: PenBBS 315 Ice Lake

Today’s ink is PenBBS 315 Ice Lake from Season 20, shimmery silver seems appropriate for the holiday season. Season 20 inks come in 15ml glass bottles, which is a great size for shimmer inks since they aren’t usually daily carry inks for me. Thanks to Vanness Pens for sending a sample over for review!

The color:

Ice Lake is a medium grey with a purple tone and lots of silver shimmer.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has a little bit of black shading and lots of silver shimmer.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, tiny sheen, and silver shimmer. The sheen is only visible in large swabs on Tomoe River paper.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in the broad and flex nib, but performed well in the smaller nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Ice Lake is a lot more purple than Diamine Moon Dust (another silver shimmer) but similar to PenBBS Misty Mountain except that MM doesn’t have shimmer. Click here to see the PenBBS inks together, and click here to see the grey inks together.

Longer writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Blue with a medium nib on a Yoseka A5 notebook. The ink had an average flow. I was impressed with how well this combo worked together-no clogs, but the shimmer only lasts about 4 lines of writing before it starts to fade out and has to be re-distributed.

Overall, I was impressed with how well behaved this ink is, and it’s beautiful. I love the small bottle size and how fast it dries.
