Longer Writing:

Overall, Ruri-iro and Ryukuyu-iro are lovely inks. They are dry, but otherwise well behaved and lovely colors. Yurush-iro and Seiheki are too pale and dry for me-almost impossible to read back, even in broad nibs.

I used a Sailor Pro Gear Slim Purple Cosmos with a zoom nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a dry flow.

Overall, it’s a lovely purple-grey ink but the flow is very dry. I added a drop of White Lightning (ink additive) to it after doing all the writing samples for this review and liked it much better that way.

I used a Lamy Al-star Green with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a super dry flow.

Overall, like other Kyoto inks I like this ink best in a wet broad nib. I love the shading on this ink but frankly Chartreuse isn’t my favorite color. I think this color looks best in the larger swabs rather than in writing so this ink isn’t one I need a full bottle of.

Overall, like other Kyoto inks I like this ink best in a wet broad nib. It’s very dry and could benefit from a drop of White Lighting, it’s a lovely bright color though.

Ink Review #1403: Kyo-no-oto 08 Urahairo

kyo-urahairo-2.jpg

Kyo-no-oto 08 Urahairo was originally released in Fall 2018. I find it so confusing when Kyoto gives two inks the same number. I understand that when they run out of stock of the first one they create another one and use the same number, so we will look at Kyo-no-oto 08 Moegiiro tomorrow. You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens.

kyo-urahairo-1.jpg

The color:

Urahairo is a pale sage green.

Swabs:

kyo-urahairo-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is darker where it pooled.

kyo-urahairo-4.jpg

Bleeding: Low

Other properties: medium shading, tiny black sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in all nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

I don’t have a close match for Urahairo, most of these are cooler toned except Robert Oster Lemongrass, which is warmer. Click here to see the Kyoto inks together, and click here to see the green inks together.

Longer writing:

kyo-urahairo-w-1.jpg

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Green with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a super dry flow.

Overall, I like this ink best in a wet broad nib. It’s very dry and could benefit from a drop of White Lighting. It can also be a bit pale in the smaller nib sizes.

Ink Review #1106: Kyo-no-oto 09 Sakuranezumi

kyo-sakuranezum-2.jpg

Today’s ink is Kyo-no-oto 09 Sakuranezumi. I wrote all of the writing samples out for this ink and realized I left the “I” off the end, but we’re just going to run with it so please pretend there’s an i there. Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

kyo-sakuranezum-1.jpg

The color:

Sakuranezumi is a dark dusky purple.

Swabs:

kyo-sakuranezum-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some pretty shading and turns black where it pooled, but doesn’t actually sheen.

kyo-sakuranezum-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in most nib sizes and bleeding in the swab only.

Comparison Swabs:

sm-ebisu-s-2.jpg

Sakuranezumi is similar to Robert Oster Claret, but doesn’t have quite as much depth. Click here to see the Kyoto inks together., and click here to see the purple inks together.

Longer writing:

sm-ebisu-s-3.jpg

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Crossed Lines-medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a very dry flow.

Overall, it’s a lovely moody purple color, but the flow is pretty dry which cased some skipping.

Aonibi is similar in color to Birmingham Fair Wheel Blue. Click here to see the Kyoto inks together, and click here to see the blue inks together.

Longer writing:

I used a Pilot Custom 74 Teal with a broad nib on a Yoseka A5 notebook. The ink had a dry flow, which did cause some skipping.

Overall, I really like the color and the shading, but the formula is just too dry for me.
