Ink Review: Jacques Herbin Scented Inks

Let’s take a look at five J Herbin Scented inks: Brun Prevenance, Rose Red, Orange, Violet and Lavender. You can purchase these inks at most retailers. My samples came from Vanness Pens.

Swabs:

Left to right: Brun Prevenance, Rose Red, Orange, Violet and Lavender

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 15-60 seconds

Water Resistance: Medium

Feathering: Low-Medium

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-Medium

Other properties: The five had low shading.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was quite a bit of feathering and bleeding in all nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Brun Prevenance is darker than Private Reserve Copper Burst.

Rose Red is lighter than Robert Oster Red Candy.

Orange is more of a golden yellow rather than an actual orange. It’s similar to Van Dieman’s Peanut Brittle.

Violet is a little lighter than Waterman Tender Purple.

Lavender is just a little more red than a royal blue. It’s lighter than Pilot Iroshizuku Ajisai.

I used a Taroko Enigma notebook. All five inks had average flows.

Overall, there’s some feathering and bleeding, which is to be expected with scented inks, but they aren’t as bad as some other scented inks I’ve tried. I’m not a big fan of scented inks simply based on performance, so these inks are not for me.

Ink Review #2683: Diamine Fruit Cocktail

It’s Day 19 of the Diamine Inkvent 2024 Calendar! You can still find the Inkvent Calendar for sale at Cult Pens, along with many others. Thanks to Diamine for sending the Inkvent Calendar over for review! Yes, I know I spelled cocktail wrong-I totally misread the label.

The color:

Fruit Cocktail is a bright orange.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks more pink-almost coral. This ink is a scented ink.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: Low

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: no shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had feathering in all nib sizes and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Fruit Cocktail is less pink than Birmingham Beach Coral. Click here to see the orange inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pelikan M600 Vibrant Orange with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow.

Overall, as a scented ink it performs better than other scented inks. It has some feathering, but not a ton, and no bleeding.

Forest Gateau is a deep red-violet. This ink is scented.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks a little more violet than red.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: Low

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had feathering in all nib sizes and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Forest Gateau is closest to Montblanc Antoine de Saint-Euxpery. Click here to see the red inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Ishime Magenta, with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, I love the base color of this ink, but it’s scented which naturally means that there’s some feathering and bleeding. I’m not a fan of scented inks just because they normally don’t perform well, so this is not an ink for me.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Bleeding: None

Other properties: no shading (there’s no shading in writing, but there’s some shading in large swabs), no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Rhubarb Green is lighter and brighter than Papier Plume Ivy 108. Click here to see the green inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Green with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, for a scented ink it’s remarkably well behaved. Most scented inks have a ton of feathering and bleeding and this ink doesn’t have any of that. If you are looking for a scented ink, this is a great option.

Ink Review #2395: KWZ Smells Like Coffee

Let’s take a look at KWZ Smells Like Coffee. This is a scented ink-it does smell like coffee. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Smells Like Coffee is a medium brown.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks darker than it does in writing.

Writing samples:

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 80 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Smells Like Coffee is a little lighter than Kaweco Caramel Brown. Click here to see the brown inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pelikan M800 Renaissance Brown with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, this is the first scented ink I’ve tried that didn’t feather and bleed like crazy, so that’s a plus, but it is super stinky and gave me a headache when I used it for half an hour straight. It also has a long dry time.

Ink Review #2044: J Herbin Green Lemon

Let’s take a look at J Herbin Lemon aka Green Lemon from the J Herbin scented collection. This ink smells like lemon (obviously). You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens.

The color:

Lemon is a bright chartreuse green.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks darker, more leaf green.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 5 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: High

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: High

Other properties: no shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Lemon is close to Ferris Wheel Press Frivolous Lime. Click here to see the green inks together.

Overall, this ink has some pro’s and con’s. Pro’s: slightly wet, bright color, fast drying and water-resistant. Con’s: way too much bleeding and feathering on every paper to be usable. This ink did dump a full converter of ink into the pen cap when stored flat. Based on behavior this ink is a no for me.
