Ink Review #2536: De Atramentis Artist Black

I’ve been testing out De Atramentis inks lately, so let’s take a look at De Atramentis Artist Black. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Artist Black is a deep neutral black.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink dries to a shiny finish, but it’s not sheen.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink worked pretty well, just a little bit of feathering but no bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Artist Black is closest to Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black. Click here to see the black inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Custom 823 in Smoke with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a wet flow.

Overall, I really enjoyed this ink-I love that it’s water resistant and has a nice wet flow.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some shading where it pooled.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: no shading (there’s no shading in writing, but there’s some shading in large swabs), no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Rhubarb Green is lighter and brighter than Papier Plume Ivy 108. Click here to see the green inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Green with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, for a scented ink it’s remarkably well behaved. Most scented inks have a ton of feathering and bleeding and this ink doesn’t have any of that. If you are looking for a scented ink, this is a great option.

da-pink-rose-gold-b-1.jpg

Pink Rose Gold is closest to Diamine Pink Glitz. Click here to see the De Atramentis inks together, and click here to see the pink inks together.

Longer writing:

da-pink-rose-gold-w-1.jpg

I used a Sailor Pro Gear Sparkling Pink with a broad nib on a Taroko Odyssey notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, it’s a nice bright spring pink. I like the rose gold shimmer, which is a bit unusual. The only other ink I’ve tried with rose gold shimmer is Robert Oster Blood Rose and Schwartz Rose. This ink does have a lot of shimmer so I did have a few clogs with the smaller nib sizes but it did fine in a wet broad nib.

da-mouse-grey-2.jpg

Let’s take a look at a reader request today, De Atramentis Mouse Grey. Thanks to the reader that sent this sample in for review! You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens (and it’s on sale right now too!)

da-mouse-grey-1.jpg

The color:

Mouse Grey is a medium cool-tone grey.

da-mouse-grey-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks more blue than it does in writing.

da-mouse-grey-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 15 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: Low-this ink did have some feathering on Rhodia and the largest two nibs on Leuchtturm

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in most nib sizes and bleeding in the broad and flex nib.

Comparison Swabs:

da-mouse-grey-s-1.jpg

Mouse Grey is a bit cooler in tone than Diamine Silver Fox, but it lacks the blue tone than PenBBS Zi has. Click here to see the De Atramentis inks together, and click here to see the grey inks together.

Longer writing:

da-mouse-grey-s-2.jpg

I used a Pelikan M805 Stresemann with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a wet flow. This nib is pretty wet on its own and paired with this wet ink it almost gushed.

Overall, I like the color and it has a nice wet flow, but it does feather a bit more than I like. The ink almost behaves like a pigment ink-it dries to a very matte, almost chalk-like finish, like a lot of the pigment inks I’ve tried.

da-pearl-violet-2.jpg

da-pearl-violet-1.jpg

The color:

Pearl Violet is a dark unsaturated violet.

da-pearl-violet-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks much darker than it does in writing.

da-pearl-violet-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: Medium-this ink feathered in most nib sizes on Rhodia and the flex nib on Leuchtturm paper.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering and a few spots of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

da-pearl-violet-s-1.jpg

Pearl Violet is a bit darker than Tono & Lims Mie, but not as dark as Diamine Grape or as vibrant as KWZ Gummiberry. Click here to see the De Atramentis inks together and click here to see the purple inks together.

Longer writing:

da-pearl-violet-s-2.jpg

I used a Pelikan M600 Violet with a fine nib on a Leuchtturm notebook. The ink had a wet flow.

Overall, the flow is a bit wet, and has some heavier feathering than the average ink because of it. I enjoy this ink on Tomoe River paper because of the wet flow, but the feathering made me not like it on the other papers.
