Ink Review #2367: Troublemaker Sinulog Black

Troublemaker Sinulog Black is from the standard collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Sinulog Black is a deep black with a blue undertone.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink dries to a velvety black.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 100 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Sinulog Black isn’t super close to any of these other black inks. Click here to see the black inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Kaweco Al-sport Red with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, it’s a bit of an unsual color with that blue undertone, but it’s too dry for me.

Ink Review #1905: Troublemaker Grand River Sunset

Troublemaker Grand River Sunset is a Phidon Pens exclusive ink. Thanks to Phidon Pens for sending this ink over for review!

The color:

Grand River Sunset is such an interesting color. In swabs it’s more green with brown and pink shading, and it looks different on each paper.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks more purpley pink than green.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: Low (my bad-I forgot to do the water test before taking the photo)

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: high shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and a bit of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Grand River is closest to Troublemaker Sea Glass. Click here to see the green inks together.

Longer writing:

I used a TWSBI Mini Rose Gold with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly dry flow.

Overall, this is such an interesting ink. I love the shading but the flow is a bit dry for me.

Ink Review #1170: Troublemaker Hanging Rice

tbm-hanging-rice-2.jpg

I have one more Troublemaker ink to review today, Troublemaker Hanging Rice. Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

tbm-hanging-rice-1.jpg

The color:

Hanging Rice is a dark olive green with a strong yellow undertone.

Swabs:

tbm-hanging-rice-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has a surprise pop of gold shimmer. It’s very subtle and didn’t show up in writing at all, just the large swabs.

tbm-hanging-rice-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 15 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and a little bit of gold shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in all nib sizes and some bleeding in the flex nib.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-hanging-rice-s-1.jpg

Hanging Rice is much yellower than most of these, and way more saturated than Troublemaker Kelp Tea. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together and click here to see the green inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-hanging-rice-w-1.jpg

I used a Kaweco Sport Sage with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly wet flow.

Overall, I enjoyed this ink. I was surprised by the little bit of gold shimmer, but it wasn’t visible in writing and didn’t mess up the ink flow so I don’t mind it.

Ink Review #1169: Troublemaker Opon Channel Blue

tbm-opon-channel-blue-2.jpg

Troublemaker Opon Channel Blue isn’t really blue, more of a dark teal so the name is a bit misleading. Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

tbm-opon-channel-blue-1.jpg

The color:

Opon Channel Blue is a dark teal with sheen.

Swabs:

tbm-opon-channel-blue-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks darker and has some pretty sheen.

tbm-opon-channel-blue-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: Low-there was some feathering in the larger nib sizes on Rhodia and Leuchtturm.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, medium sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in all nib sizes and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-opon-channel-blue-s-1.jpg

Open Channel Blue is similar to Robert Oster Deep Sea, Diamine Aurora Borealis and Noodler’s Turquoise. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together and click here to see the teal inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-opon-channel-blue-w-1.jpg

I used a TWSBI Eco-T Mint with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly wet flow.

Overall, it’s a lovely ink but hardly unique, there are quite a few inks similar to this one already. Robert Oster Deep Sea, Diamine Aurora Borealis and Noodler’s Turquoise are all good alternatives.

tbm-purple-yam-1.jpg

The color:

Purple Yam is a deep blue-violet.

tbm-purple-yam-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks darker and has a bit of green and bronze sheen.

Other properties: low shading, tiny sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in all nib sizes and some bleeding in the flex nib.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-purple-yam-s-1.jpg

Purple Yam is closest to Sailor Jentle Shigure and Diamine Lilac Night. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together and click here to see the purple inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-purple-yam-w-1.jpg

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Purple with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly wet, slightly sticky flow.

Overall, it’s a nice ink but not one I think I need a full bottle of. I think I just prefer Sailor Jentle Shigure over this one and both colors are similar.

Ink Review #1165: Troublemaker Blue Guitar

tbm-blue-guitar-2.jpg

Troublemaker Blue Guitar is another recent addition to the Troublemaker standard lineup. I know shipping and stock is all messed up right now, but I wanted to review it for when it comes available again. Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

tbm-blue-guitar-1.jpg

The color:

Blue Guitar is a bright medium blue.

Swabs:

tbm-blue-guitar-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some pretty dark pink sheen.

tbm-blue-guitar-4.jpg

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: Low-there was a bit of feathering on Leuchtturm and Rhodia in the flex nib.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-there was a bit of bleeding on Rhodia in the flex nib.

Other properties: medium shading, medium pink sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in all nib sizes and some bleeding in the flex nib.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-blue-guitar-s-1.jpg

Blue Guitar is a bit darker than KWZ Hawaii but not quite as dark as Colorverse Superenova. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together and click here to see the blue inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-blue-guitar-w-1.jpg

I used a Lamy Al-star Pacific Blue with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly wet, slightly sticky flow.

Overall, it’s a lovely ink, but it does have a few quirks-a little bit of feathering and bleeding, and it does smear just a bit on Tomoe River Paper after drying. I really enjoyed the pretty shading though.

Ink Review #1142: Troublemaker Petrichor

tbm-petrichor-2.jpg

Today’s ink is a bit usual; Troublemaker Petrichor is interesting because it’s green when wet and dries to a different color entirely. I wasn’t really sure what to call this color so I compared it to a lot of other swabs and decided it’s closest to grey, with purple and green shading (yes, I will compare it to some Sailor Ink Studio inks below). Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

tbm-petrichor-1.jpg

The color:

Petrichor is a moody grey-purple with pops of green.

Swabs:

tbm-petrichor-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks way more purple than it does in writing, and you don’t see the green as much.

tbm-petrichor-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: high shading, no sheen, and no shimmer. The shading was visible in every nib size I tried.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in most nib sizes and a few dots of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-petrichor-s-1.jpg

Petrichor is a bit lighter than Sailor Ink Studio 223, but much darker than 123. It’s also more grey than Vinta Armada. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together, and click here to see the grey inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-petrichor-w-1.jpg

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Green with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a drier than average flow.

Overall, this ink is really interesting. Starts green, dries to purple-grey with purple and green shading. I love playing with this ink, but it can be rather light in some nib sizes, so I wouldn’t use this as an everyday ink just as a fun ink.

Ink Review #1139: Troublemaker Luneta Twilight Pink

tbm-luneta-twilight-2.jpg

Let’s take a look at Troublemaker Luneta Twilight Pink. Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

tbm-luneta-twilight-1.jpg

The color:

Luneta Twilight Pink ranges from a medium pink to more of a bright coral depending on the paper.

Swabs:

tbm-luneta-twilight-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has just a bit of shading, and looks more yellow where the ink pools.

tbm-luneta-twilight-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in most nib sizes and a few dots of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-luneta-twilight-s-1.jpg

When compared to other inks Luneta looks a bit more coral. It’s a bit more pink than Sailor Ink Studio 230, but not quite as pink was Kobe Oji Cherry. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together, and click here to see the pink inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-luneta-twilight-pink-w-1.jpg

I used a TWSBI Eco Pastel Pink with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a wetter than average flow, which worked well in this fine nib.

Overall, it’s an interesting bright pink. It worked well in the Eco fine nib which struggles with drier inks.

Longer writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Purple with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma A5 notebook. The ink had a wet, slightly sticky flow.

Overall, I love the dusky purple color and it’s pretty well behaved, but the flow does feel just a bit sticky. I didn’t have any smearing issues with this ink!

Ink Review #1085: Troublemaker Foxglove

tbm-foxglove-2.jpg

Let’s take a look at Troublemaker Foxglove. Thanks to Shigure Inks for sending a sample over for review!

tbm-foxglove-1.jpg

The color:

Foxglove is a medium dusky purple with some shading.

Swabs:

tbm-foxglove-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some blue shading.

tbm-foxglove-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering and no bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

tbm-foxglove-s-1.jpg

Foxglove is warmer in tone than Pilot Iroshizuku Murasaki-shikibu. It’s much darker than Pen Saijiki Fujifusa. Click here to see the Troublemaker inks together and click here to see the purple inks together.

Longer writing:

tbm-foxglove-s-2.jpg

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Purple with a medium nib on a Leuchtturm notebook. The ink had a dry flow.

Overall, I like the color, but the flow is a little too dry for me. There is a little bit of blue shading, but it’s hard to get in writing. After trying some of the other Troublemaker shading inks I was just hoping for a bit more shading. You could call it a dual shader since it shades a different color than the base, but it’s hard to get it outside of large swabs.
