Ink Review #2545: Wearingeul The Old Man and the Sea

Wearingeul Ernest Hemingway - The Old Man and the Sea is from the World Literature collection. You can still find this ink for sale at some retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Old Man and the Sea is a teal blue with shading and shimmer.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is much darker where pooled, but it’s not sheen. It has red shimmer.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 50 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: high shading, no sheen, and red shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Old Man and the Sea is bluer than Diamine Serendipity. Click here to see the teal inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Custom 74 Teal with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly dry flow.

Overall, I love the color and the shading. I don’t love the red shimmer so I would probably let the shimmer settle to the bottom of the bottle and then use it.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Black Ice with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, I don’t like this ink. It’s way too pale in writing to even see it let alone read it. The longer writing just looks like a blank page. It’s also way too dry for me. I understand that it would be good for art, but that’s not how I use fountain pen ink. I would give this one a pass.

Ink Review #2537: De Atramentis Aubergine

So I recently tried De Atramentis Aubergine only to realize that it’s the same ink as De Atramentis Alexander Hamilton. Upon further research I found out that Aubergine is known under 11 total names: Aubergine, Alexander Hamilton, Giacomo Puccini, Louise Aston, Laura Biagoitti Roma (Perfume ink No 7), Birthday, Titus Flavius Caesar, Algiz Rune, Paul Cezanne, Paris & Louis Renalt. De Atramentis does list the color as Aubergine on the label, but the average/new user probably thinks that just means purple, and doesn’t realize that it means that it’s the same ink as Aubergine. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Aubergine is a medium purple.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some gold sheen.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Bleeding: Low

Other properties: low shading, low gold sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:
