Sailor 50 States

Sailor has been putting out more inks from their 50 States collection. Let’s take a look at Texas, Virginia, Oregon, New York and Illinois. I purchased my bottles of ink from Pen Chalet. Sailor has been naming some inks for this collection on their Instagram page-keep an eye on their Insta stories to vote on names.

Swabs:

Left to right: Texas-inspired by the state’s history of making leather goods, Virginia-inspired by the state bird the cardinal, Oregon-inspired by the state tree the Douglas Fir, New York-inspired by the baseball team, and Illinois-inspired by the Chicago skyline.

These inks come in square 20ml bottles. (My site host is being a bit of a pain right now so I’m having to change up format a bit).

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 15-40 seconds

Water Resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, low sheen and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was lots of feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Texas is closest in color to J Herbin Lie de The.

Virginia is closest in color to Sailor Shikiori Yodaki.

Oregon is a little warmer in tone than Diamine Deep Dark Green.

Illinois is close to Diamine Midnight. New York is a little darker than Colorverse Apollo 11.

Longer Writing:

I used a Mabie Todd Swan on a Taroko Enigma notebook. All of the inks had an average flow.

Overall, out of the five inks New York is my favorite but I enjoyed all five of them. The only thing I don’t love is the price-$1/ml is rather dear for everyday use.

Ink Review #1423: Jacques Herbin 350 Vert Atlantide

Jacques Herbin recently started a new shimmer collection called 350 with a debut ink called Jacques Herbin 350 Vert Atlantide. I purchased my bottle of ink from Pen Chalet (aff. link).

The bottle:

Vert Atlantide is available in a square 50ml bottle.

The color:

Vert Atlantide is a dark forest green with both gold and silver shimmer.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks darker with some black sheen.

Dry time: 15 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: Low

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low

Other properties: medium shading, tiny black sheen, and gold and silver shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in most nib sizes but just a few dots of bleeding.

Longer writing:

I used a Pilot Custom 74 Forest Green with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, I kinda love the gold and silver mixed shimmer. It performed pretty well while being a nice dark green. The shimmer is more subtle than J Herbin’s other inks but I kinda love it.

Robert Oster Arizona Inks

Pen Chalet recently came out with a few Robert Oster exclusive inks based on the Arizona Desert. I have three so far: Sedona Red, Saguaro Green and Monsoon Sky. I purchased my bottles of ink from Pen Chalet.

Swabs:

The bottles:

All three inks come in 50ml plastic bottles.

Ink drops:

Monsoon Sky has some pretty pink sheen.

Dry Time:

All three inks dried in 30 seconds.

Water Resistance:

All had low water resistance.

Overall, out of the three Monsoon Sky is my favorite-I wasn’t sure about it at first swab but after playing with it I’m quite in love with it, but I enjoyed all three. I’m looking forward to trying the other ink from this collection called Antelope Canyon.

Ink Review #1419: Monteverde Citrine

Monteverde Citrine is a late addition to the Monteverde Gemstone collection. I purchased my bottle of ink from Pen Chalet (aff. link).

The bottle:

Citrine is available in both 30ml and 90ml glass bottles. I love the 30ml size, enough to play with but not so much that I’m stuck with the bottle for years.

The color:

Citrine is a dark orange-red.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks more brown than orange.

I used a Lamy Safari Mango with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly dry flow.

Overall, the color is great for fall and it is generally well behaved, but I wish the flow was just a little bit wetter.

Ink Review #1418: Robert Oster Rose Gold Antiqua

I saw a picture of Robert Oster Rose Gold Antiqua on Instagram recently and I knew I had to try it! I purchased my bottle of ink from Pen Chalet (aff. link).

The color:

Rose Gold Antiqua is a deep rose pink.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks less saturated with copper shimmer.

I used a Diplomat Aero Antique Rose with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a slightly dry flow.

Overall, I love this ink in a wet broad nib. It’s a lovely pink and well behaved too!

Ink Review #1417: Papier Plume Le Heron Bleu

Papier Plume Le Heron Bleu is a recent limited edition ink from 2020. Thanks to the reader that sent this ink in for review! You can find this ink for sale at Vanness Pens. A portion of the sale of each ink will be donated to the coalition to restore coastal Louisiana.

The color:

Le Heron Bleu is a medium blue with a slight green undertone.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks much darker.

Overall, this is a lovely ink. It’s well behaved and I love that they are donating part of the proceeds to charity.

Colorverse Apollo 11

The Colorverse Apollo 11 set was a limited edition set to commemorate the first moon landing. This set can still be found at some retailers including Jet Pens. Thanks to the reader that sent these inks in for review!

Swabs:

Left to right: One Small Step, Columbia, Tranquility Base, Eagle and Apollo 11. The first four inks come in 15ml bottles while Apollo 11 comes in a 65ml bottle.

Ink drops:

Columbia is the only ink that shows a little bit of sheen.

Dry Time:

All five inks dried in 30-40 seconds.

Water Resistance:

All have low water resistance.

Overall, out of the five Apollo 11 is my favorite so I appreciate that it’s the largest bottle out of the set. They are all generally pretty well behaved and worth a try. Columbia is my least favorite simply because I don’t love reds that lean towards orange.

Ink Review #1410: Noodler's American Eel Black

Eel Black is a medium black with a brown undertone.

Longer writing:

I used a Kaweco Al-sport Anthracite with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a wet flow at the beginning but the longer I wrote the more dry it became. It doesn’t feel very lubricated to me.

Overall, I appreciate that this ink is water-resistant but I don’t love the flow. It’s supposed to be lubricated but it doesn’t feel that way in longer writing.

Lie de The is a medium warm-tone brown.

Longer writing:

I used a Franklin-Christoph 46 in Autumn Oak with a fine flex nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a dry flow which caused some skips, hard starts and twice the feed dried completely up and had to be primed.

Overall, I don’t love this ink simply based on the dry flow issues. The color is nice but it just doesn’t work for me.
