Ink Review #2062: Van Dieman's Summer Wineglass Bay

Let’s take a look at Van Dieman’s Summer Wineglass Bay from the Tassie/Seasons Collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Wineglass Bay is a bright turquoise.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some shading.

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: Low

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and a few dots of bleeding.

Longer Writing:

I used a Lamy Al-star Pacific Blue with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a dry flow.

Overall, I love the color but the flow is a bit dry for me, and there’s a little more feathering than I like to see. I think there’s some better blues out there this same color.

Van Dieman's Colours of Tasmania

Let’s take a look at 5 inks from Van Dieman’s Colours of Tasmania collection. You can find these inks for sale at Vanness Pens.

Swabs:

Left to right: Tasmanian Devil, Queenstown Gold Mine, Autumn Morning, Snowy Mountain Sunset and Icy Great Lake.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 20-50 seconds

Water Resistance: Low-Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: Tasmanian Devil had low shading. Queenstown Gold had low shading and gold shimmer. Autumn Morning had medium shading and gold shimmer. Snowy Mountain had low shading and pink shimmer. Icy Great lake had low shading and blue shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was lots of feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Tasmanian Devil is closest to Robert Oster Black is Black

Queenstown Gold isn’t super close to any of these brown inks.

Autumn Morning is darker than Esterbrook Tangerine Shimmer.

Snowy Mountain is darker than Vinta Julia.

Icy Great Lake is a bit lighter than Diamine Subzero.

All of the inks had an average flow.

Overall, Autumn Morning had gorgeous color and shading so it’s my favorite out of the five. Icy Great Lake had too much shimmer, which clogged and choked the flow, so it’s my least favorite.

Overall, this is a lovely ink but there is just a touch of feathering. It’s a very nice color blue though.

Overall, the ink is a bit too pale and dry for me. I would stick to medium and broad nibs for the most legibility.

The color:

A Scorpii is a medium coral pink.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks less coral, more straight pink.

Overall, I enjoyed the color but the flow is a bit dry for me.

PenBBS Season 24

Let’s take a look at 5 inks from PenBBS Season 24. My samples came from Vanness Pens but they are no longer carrying the brand so I’m unsure where you can purchase them.

Swabs:

Left to right: Rose, Iron, Tong and Heron.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 40-70 seconds

Water Resistance: Low

Feathering: Rose had high feathering, the rest had none.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Rose bled, but the rest were fine.

Other properties: Rose had silver shimmer. Tong and Heron had low shading and Iron had low shading and medium pink sheen.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was lots of feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Rose is closest to Van Dieman’s Moon Jellyfish.

Iron is similar to Diamine Yuletide.

Tong is a little more pink than Van Dieman’s Tasmanian Robin Pink.

Heron is similar to Robert Oster Muddy Grass.

All of the inks had an average flow except Rose which had a wet flow.

Overall, Rose is my least favorite due to the bleeding and feathering and Iron is my favorite.

I used a Platinum 3776 Nice Lavande with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, I enjoyed this ink. It’s well behaved for a shimmer ink and is a nice color. I don’t know that I like it better than J Herbin Amethyste de L’oural simply because I prefer silver shimmer over gold.
