Ink Review #2658: Rohrer and Klingner Alt-bordeaux

Rohrer and Klingner Alt-Bordeaux is from the standard collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Alt-bordeaux is an unsaturated violet.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is more saturated than on the Col-o-ring swab.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 60 seconds

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some bleeding and feathering in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Alt-bordeaux is darker and more purple than Platinum Lavender Black, but lighter and less saturated than IWI Great Cold. Click here to see the purple inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Kaweco Al-sport Lilac with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, this is a great ink-well behaved, affordable, and even has some nice shading!

Cassia is a vibrant purple.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some pretty green sheen.

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, low green sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some bleeding and feathering in the larger nib sizes.

Colorverse a Lib is from the Project Volume 5 collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

a Lib is a pale lilac purple.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks much darker than it does in writing.

Writing samples:

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

I used a Lamy Safari Violet with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, the color is interesting, and I like it in large swabs, but in writing the shading can be too light, which makes it hard to read.

J Herbin Red and Purple Inks

Let’s take a look at five J Herbin inks today. You can finds these inks for sale at a lot of retailers, including Vanness Pens.

Swabs:

Left to right: Rouge Caroubier, Rouge Bourgogne, Poussiere de Lune, Larmes de Cassis, and Violette Pensee.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 20-40 seconds

Water Resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: All five have low shading.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Rouge Caroubier is a little more pink than Robert Oster Santa’s Hangover.

Rouge Bourgogne is more pink than these other red inks.

Poussiere de Lune is closest to Diamine Harmony.

Larmes de Cassis is deeper than these other purple inks.

Violette Pensée is close to Thorton’s Purple.

Longer Writing:

I used a Taroko Enigma notebook. All five had average flows.

Overall, I really like these inks. They are classics in the fountain pen community, and for good reason. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Wearingeul Peter Pan is from the Peter and Wendy collection. You can find this ink for sale at some retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Peter Pan is a pale pea green.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is darker than the Col-o-ring swab and shades to an unsaturated brown.

I used a Pelikan M605 Green White with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, this ink is too pale and dry for me. I’m just not excited about it.

Orange Monkey is a medium tangerine orange.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink shades to a deep red-orange.

Writing samples:

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some just a little bit of bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Longer Writing:

I used an Edison Collier Persimmon Swirl with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow.

Overall, I really like this ink. It has a slightly wet flow and is water resistant, both of which are great for me.

Lampwork Museum is a deep maroon, almost a purple.

Longer Writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Violet with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a dry flow.

Overall, I like the color, but it can be rather light in smaller nib sizes. I didn’t have any issues with the shimmer clogging, but the flow is drier than I prefer. I would use this ink in wet, broader nibs to help it flow better and be easily read.

Robert Oster Elements Inks

Today’s inks are from the Robert Oster Elements collection. You can finds these inks for sale at a lot of retailers, including Vanness Pens.

Swabs:

Left to right: Earth, Fire, Water and Wind.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 20-40 seconds

Water Resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: Earth and Water have medium shading, Fire has low shading, and Wind has high shading. Water has blue shimmer.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Earth is lighter than Birmingham Antique Sepia.

Fire is similar to a lot of other inks.

Water is closest to Nemosine Blue Snowball Nebula Twinkle.

Wind is close to Sailor Ink Studio 243.

Longer Writing:

I used a Taroko Enigma notebook. All four had slightly dry flows.

Overall, these are lovely inks. I do wish the flow was a bit wetter, but they are lovely to use in wetter nibs.

The color:

Permanent Black is more of a medium grey than a black.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some shading.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink worked pretty well, just a little bit of feathering but no bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Permanent Black isn’t close to any of these other black inks-it’s more of a medium grey. Click here to see the black inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Lamy 2000 Black Amber with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, this ink has some pro’s and con’s. Pro’s: it’s water-resistant and it works pretty well on cheap copy paper. Con’s: it’s more of a dark grey than a black and can be too light to be easily read in smaller nib sizes.
