Ink Review #2877: Octopus Gryphon Brown

Today’s ink is Octopus Gryphon Brown from the Sheening collection. My sample of ink came from Vanness Pens. I need to start off with saying that this color was a bear to edit, and I’m still not happy with it. It’s too purple compared to how it looks in person. The color is the most accurate in the comparison swabs photo and the longer writing photo.

The color:

Gryphon Brown is a medium red-brown. Like I said above, the color is less purple in person.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some green sheen.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, as well as cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Water resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Longer Writing:

I used a Kaweco Al-Sport Rose Gold with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, the brown with green sheen combo is fun. High sheen can be problematic sometimes due to smearing, but I didn’t have any issues with this one smearing.

Overall, I always have a hard time with yellow inks-they are usually too pale to read, but this one is easily read in a medium nib. I love the bright color and how well behaved it is.

Ink Review #2735: Octopus Fluids Document Green

Let’s take a look at Octopus Fluids Document Green from the Document Series. You can find this ink for sale at some retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Document Green is a medium evergreen.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink turns black where it pooled but I wouldn’t call it sheen.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, as well as on cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Bleeding: There’s some bleeding in the flex nib and swab on Rhodia, but I think that’s due to a flaw in the paper rather than the ink. I’ve had this happen with most inks on this most recent batch of paper.

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in all nib sizes.

Octopus Fluids x Fountainfeder Inks

Today’s inks are six Octopus Fluids x Fountainfeder inks. These inks are exclusive to Fountainfeder, and can be purchased in their online store. Thanks to Fountainfeder for sending these inks over for review!

Swabs:

Left to right: Midsummer, Schietwetter, Grunkohl, Nordlichter, Ostsee and Nordsee.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 30-40 seconds

Water Resistance: Medium

Feathering: Medium-they feathered quite a bit on Rhodia.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Medium-there was some bleeding on Rhodia and Leuchtturm.

Other properties: The three teal-ish inks all had pink sheen.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was quite a bit of feathering and bleeding in all nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Midsommar is closest to Backpack Amsterdam Orange.

Schietwetter’s lighter shading is similar to Robert Oster Sydney Darling Harbour, the darker part of the shading is closer to Diamine Dark Forest.

Grunkohl is similar to Kobe 15 Maiko Green.

Nordsee is on the blue side of teal and is closest to Diamine Yuletide. Ostsee is more of a true teal, and is similar to Diamine Aurora Borealis. Nordlichter is on the green side of teal and is darker than Colorverse Pale Blue Dot.

Overall, I love the colors of these inks. The teal ones are obviously my favorite since I love teal, but the other colors are just as good. Schietwetter is probably the most unique, and the one I would pick to get a full bottle of if I had to pick one. I would stick to nicer papers like Tomoe River though because there was some feathering and bleeding on Rhodia and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 60 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: no shading, monster black sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Witch Green’s base color is closest to Pilot Iroshizuku Hoteison. Click here to see the green inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Custom 74 Forest with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average but slightly sticky flow.

Overall, I enjoy the base color of this ink, it’s a nice deep green. At first I loved the sheening trend, but I’m kinda over it. Green with black sheen is unusual however, and a lovely change from the average green with pink/red sheen.
