Ink Review #2907: De Atramentis Document Black Blue

Today’s ink is De Atramentis Document Black Blue from the Document collection. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Document Black Blue is a gorgeous blue black. I have no idea why they named it black blue, probably because it’s on the darker side of blue black, but who knows-either way the color is so beautiful. It’s also the darkest blue black ink I have with high water resistance. All of the others are lighter and less saturated.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink shades almost to a purple.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, and on cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 10 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: Low-just a very small amount.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-mostly on Leuchtturm in the larger nib sizes.

Other properties: no shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had feathering in the flex nib and some ghosting.

Comparison Swabs:

Black Blue is darker than Robert Oster Thunderstorm, but lighter than KWZ Warsaw Dreaming. Click here to see the blue black inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Wish with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a wet flow.

Overall, I’m in love with the color. I know I’m biased because I love blue black inks so much, but this one is amazing. In a medium nib the wet flow was actually a little bit wet for my tastes (which is something I never thought I would say). I tried it in extra fine and fine nibs and loved the flow so much more. I love the fast dry time and high water resistance. I’m a fan!

Ink Review #2878: Octopus Document Grey

Today’s ink is Octopus Document Grey from the Document Series. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Document Grey is a medium neutral grey.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper it turned black where it pooled.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had feathering in all nib sizes but not much bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Document Grey is cooler-toned than Diamine Ash, but warmer than Diamine Grey. Click here to see the grey inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pelikan M205 Moonstone with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow.

Overall, I really like this ink. The flow is smooth and slightly wet, and it has high water resistance. I enjoyed it.

Octopus Fluids Document Red is from the Document Collection. You can find this ink for sale at some retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Document is a classic medium red.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has a little bit of shading.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, as well as on cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-mainly just in the flex nib.

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in all nib sizes.

Longer Writing:

I used a Sailor Pro Gear Slim Supernova Red with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow.

Overall, I like the color. The flow is a bit wet, which causes the ink to spread out a bit as it dries. It has some bleeding, mainly in the flex nib and swab. It dries pretty quick and has high water resistance. It’s okay but not fabulous. I’ll pass on a full bottle of this one.

The color:

Document Green is a medium evergreen.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink turns black where it pooled but I wouldn’t call it sheen.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, as well as on cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: There’s some bleeding in the flex nib and swab on Rhodia, but I think that’s due to a flaw in the paper rather than the ink. I’ve had this happen with most inks on this most recent batch of paper.

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in all nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

I used a Pelikan M600 Vibrant Green with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow.

Overall, I love the water resistance and flow this ink has. I really like it when inks are just a little bit wet and hold up well to water.

The color:

Document Olive Green is a lovely medium olive green.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink is much darker than it is on the Col-o-ring swab.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, as well as on cheap copy paper.

Dry time: 30 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low (only in the flex nib)

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some feathering and bleeding in the larger nib sizes.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Bamboo Forest with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow. I love this pen/ink combo.

Overall, I like this ink. The color is interesting, the flow is lovely, and it doesn’t break the bank.

Purple Violet is a medium purple.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has a little bit of shading.

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 40 seconds

Water resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had just a little bit of feathering and a few dots of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Longer Writing:

I used a Pelikan M600 Violet with a fine nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a wet flow.

Overall, this ink is a nice, well-behaved purple. It’s a great option if you are looking for a water-resistant purple.
