Left to right: Tiger Quoll, Red Lightning, Midnight, Moon Flower, and Moonlit Lake.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 40-60 seconds

Water Resistance: Low-Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: Tiger Quoll had low shading, high green sheen and gold shimmer. Red Lightning had low shading and gold shimmer. Midnight had low shading. Moon Flower had medium shading. Moonlit Lake had medium shading, high pink sheen and teal shimmer.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size and some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Tiger Quoll is brighter than Diamine Cocoa Shimmer.

Red Lightning is close to Robert Oster Sparkling Cranberry.

Midnight is close to Diamine Silent Night.

Moon Flower is a little more purple than Diamine Thunderbolt.

Moonlit Lake is close to Diamine Garland.

Longer Writing:

All had average flows.

Overall, these are lovely inks, well-behaved and nice colors. Moonlit Lake is my favorite out of the five.

Ink Review #2228: Private Reserve Avocado

Let’s take a look at Private Reserve Avocado. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Avocado is a medium evergreen.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink had some feathering.

Water resistance: Medium

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had just a little bit of feathering and some bleeding.

Longer Writing:

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Bamboo Forest with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma Notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, this is a lovely green color but it does have some feathering.

Akkerman 21-24 Inks

Let’s take a look at four Akkerman inks today. You can find these inks for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

Swabs:

Left to right: 21 China Town Red, 22 Hopjesbruin, 23 Bekakt Haags and 24 Zuiderpark

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 30-40 seconds

Water Resistance: Medium

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: 21 and 24 had low shading, 22 had high shading and 23 had medium shading.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size but no bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

China Red is close to Taccia Aka Red.

Hopjesbruin is more yellow than Sailor Ink Studio 573.

Bekakt Haags is close to Aurora Brown.

Zuiderpark is lighter than Colorverse Bluish Green.

Longer Writing:

All had average flows.

Overall, I enjoyed all four of these inks. They are well behaved and nice colors.

Ink Review #2223: 3 Oysters Marine Green

Let’s take a look at 3 Oysters Marine Green. You can find this ink for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

The color:

Marine Green is a deep teal with red sheen.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some pretty red sheen.

I used a Sailor Pro Gear Sparkling Shamrock with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma Notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, I like this ink. It’s well behaved and a gorgeous color.

4 KWZ Inks

Let’s take a look at four KWZ inks today. You can find these inks for sale at most retailers including Vanness Pens.

Swabs:

Left to right: Orange, Hunter Green, Menthol Green and Sheen Machine 2.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry Time: 70-140 seconds

Water Resistance: Low

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: All four had low shading. Sheen Machine 2 had monster pink sheen.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size as well as quite a a bit of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Orange is similar to PenBBS Spessartine.

Hunter Green is similar to Kobe 03.

Menthol Green is a little bit brighter than Diamine Marine.

Sheen Machine 2 is close to Organics Studio Walden.

Longer Writing:

All had average flows.

Overall, Menthol Green is my favorite out of the four. Menthol Green, Hunter Green and Orange are lovely and well behaved. I’m not a fan of Sheen Machine 2. It never fully dries so it smears easily.

Van Dieman's Mandarin Duck

Other properties: All three had medium shading. Duck Nape had low pink sheen. Duck Breast had high bronze sheen and copper shimmer.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Duck Wing is darker and less saturated than PenBBS Midnight.

Duck Nape is similar to Sailor Ink Studio 764.

Duck Breast is darker than Colorverse Hayabusa Glistening.

Longer Writing:

All had average flows.

Overall, Duck Nape is my favorite out of the three, but all are well behaved and interesting.

Ink Review #2215: Dominant Industry Maple

Today’s ink is Dominant Industry Maple. Thanks to Yoseka Stationery for sending this ink over for review!

The color:

Maple is a terracotta orange.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink shades to a dark red.

Longer Writing:

I used a Lamy Safari Terracotta with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had an average flow.

Overall, this is a nice interesting orange. It’s well behaved with a little bit of shading.

Octopus Write & Draw

Today’s inks are three Octopus Write and Draw Inks. These are pigmented inks so they require a bit more care than the average ink. You can find these inks for sale at Vanness Pens.

Dry Time: 40-100 seconds

Water Resistance: High

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: Grey and Brown had medium shading

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Black Elephant is closest to Platinum Carbon Black.

Grey Frog is closest to Birmingham Sterling Silver.

Brown Colibri is less saturated than Sailor Ink Studio 573.

Longer Writing:

All had slightly wet flows.

Overall, I really enjoyed these inks. They are slightly wet but smooth and lovely to write with, I love the high water resistance but Black Elephant does have a rather long dry time. Out of the three I think Grey Frog is my favorite.

Cyan is a medium blue green.

New Kyo-no-oto Inks

Left to right: 11 Ruri-iro, 12 Ryukuyu-iro, 13 Seiheki and 14 Yurush-iro.

Dry Time: 30 seconds

Water Resistance: Low-Medium

Feathering: None-Low

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None-Low

Other properties: All four had medium shading. Ruri-iro had gold shimmer and Ryukuyu-iro had silver shimmer.

On Walmart Pen + Gear copy paper there was some feathering in every nib size as well as some bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

Ruri-iro is closest to De Atramentis Columbia Blue Copper.

Ryukuyu-iro is less saturated than J Herbin Vert Atlantide.

Seiheki is less saturated than Sailor Ink Studio 264.

Yurush-iro is less saturated than Pilot Iroshizuku Benzaiten.

Longer Writing:

All had dry flows.

Overall, Ruri-iro and Ryukuyu-iro are lovely inks. They are dry, but otherwise well behaved and lovely colors. Yurush-iro and Seiheki are too pale and dry for me-almost impossible to read back, even in broad nibs.
